Accelerating digital transformation with data and analytics: a panel discussion recap
Digital transformation is not just about technology. It’s a broader cultural shift towards data-driven decision-making, customer-centricity, and continuous innovation.
Our last panel discussion offers a valuable roadmap for organisations embarking on their digital transformation journey. Featuring industry experts, George Lynch and Susann Ulrich, we delves into the crucial role of data and analytics in powering successful digital journeys. By understanding the critical role of data and analytics, addressing key challenges, and using emerging technologies, organisations can unlock the immense potential for growth and innovation in today’s data-driven world.
Here is an expanded summary, delving deeper into each thread:
Defining the digital landscape
Susann Ulrich sets the stage by outlining a comprehensive definition of digital transformation, emphasising its evolution beyond mere technology adoption. She highlights the integration of cloud computing, focusing on customer experience, evolving business models and the strategic use of automation, IoT (Internet of Things) and edge computing. This holistic view underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to digital transformation.
Data and analytics: The engine of transformation
George Lynch dives deep into the critical role of data and analytics, outlining three key applications:
1. Finding the need for transformation: Data analysis can reveal inefficiencies, outdated processes and emerging market trends, prompting the need for change
2. Monitoring transformation progress: Analytics offer real-time insights into the effectiveness of transformation initiatives, allowing for course correction and optimisation
3. Maturing data capabilities: Building a robust data analytics infrastructure is essential for sustained success. This includes setting up a dedicated team of data analysts, ensuring data quality and governance and fostering a data-driven culture.
I also think what's really important is that we use data and analytics to monitor the success of digital transformation and indeed sometimes the failure. I've been involved in a number of digital transformation programmes where they have crawled to failure or crawled to success.

Navigating the challenges
Susann names three key categories of challenges in integrating data and analytics into transformation strategies:
1. People: Resistance to change, lack of leadership alignment and insufficient skills and talent can hinder progress
2. Process: Data quality issues, inadequate data governance and siloed data structures can impede effective use
3. Technology: Legacy systems, data integration challenges and a lack of suitable analytics tools can pose significant hurdles
According to the Nash Squared Digital Leadership Report, only one in four digital leaders are confident that they are using their data effectively for insights and this can be owed in part to inefficient data management practices.
George expands on these challenges, emphasising the need for a dedicated data analyst team to champion data quality and governance. He also underscores the importance of addressing skills gaps and building a culture of data-driven decision-making.
Emerging technologies and trends
George Lynch explores the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as generative AI (Artificial Intelligence), business intelligence, data fabric and data mesh. He discusses how these technologies can reshape the analytics landscape, enhance data accessibility and use and accelerate digital transformation. He emphasises the importance of data literacy across the organisation and the concept of “data as a product,” highlighting the potential for data monetisation.
Susann adds how cloud data platforms are empowering organisations to unlock the value of their data for monetisation and competitive advantage.
Audience engagement
The discussion concludes with an interactive Q&A segment, addressing practical concerns raised by the audience.
Resistance to change: Susann offers strategies like building a compelling vision for the future, involving key stakeholders in the transformation process and effectively communicating the benefits to overcome resistance
Explainability of predictions: George emphasises the importance of interpretable models and data explainability techniques to ensure trust and transparency in data-driven decision-making
Key skillsets for success: Both George and Susann highlight the critical need for both technical skills (e.g., enterprise architects, AI specialists, cloud architects) and non-technical skills (e.g., customer-centricity, flexibility, communication and collaboration) to navigate the complex digital landscape effectively
Conclusion
By embracing data and analytics as strategic assets, your organisation can transform from a passive observer to an active navigator, charting a course toward sustainable success in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Remember, the journey ahead may be challenging, but with the right tools, skills and cultural mindset, data can be your powerful paddle, propelling you toward a brighter future.
