Yet the question for logistics businesses is no longer simply “How do we adopt the latest technology?”
It is becoming: “Where will technology genuinely make a difference to our operation?”
Because in logistics, technology cannot simply look impressive. It has to work within the reality of warehouses, transport networks, customer commitments, legacy platforms, fragmented data and constantly changing operational demands.

The challenge isn't necessarily that logistics is slow to innovate. In many cases, it is that logistics leaders are becoming increasingly selective about which innovations deserve investment.
Logistics businesses are already operating in technology-rich environments. Warehouse management systems, transport management platforms, ERP systems, route optimisation, automation, tracking, data analytics and increasingly AI are all becoming part of the technology landscape.
But adding another technology layer doesn't automatically make an operation smarter. In fact, it can make things considerably more complicated.
Disconnected systems create duplicated data. Manual workarounds introduce errors. Poor-quality data undermines analytics. Legacy platforms can make integrating new technologies difficult. And technology investments that aren't aligned to the operation can create complexity without delivering meaningful commercial value.
NashTech's experience is that the starting point should therefore be the operational problem, not the technology.
What is preventing the business from moving faster?
Where are people spending time on repetitive tasks?
Where are decisions being made without reliable information?
Where does poor integration create friction?
And where could better technology create a genuine competitive advantage?
That is a very different approach to simply asking what is possible with the latest AI or automation technology.
AI is perhaps the clearest example. There is enormous potential for AI across logistics - from demand forecasting and route optimisation to warehouse operations, document processing, predictive maintenance and decision support.
But AI doesn't magically fix the foundations beneath it.
If data is fragmented, inconsistent or inaccessible, AI will not resolve those problems overnight. If systems cannot communicate with each other, adding an AI capability can simply introduce another disconnected layer. This is why integration, data and modernisation are becoming as important to AI adoption as the AI itself.
NashTech's 2026 research into custom software development found that more than 70% of logistics leaders expect AI to have a significant impact on custom software development. At the same time, the research highlights the continuing challenges created by legacy technology, integration and capability gaps.
The implication is important: AI adoption isn't simply an AI problem. It's a technology architecture problem, a data problem and an operational problem.
This is where custom software has an increasingly important role to play.
Off-the-shelf platforms can provide an excellent foundation, but logistics operations are rarely standardised. Businesses have different processes, customer propositions, networks, data environments and sources of competitive advantage.
Trying to force those differences into a standard platform can result in expensive customisation or processes that are redesigned around the software rather than around the business. Custom software provides another option: build around the things that make the organisation different.
That might mean creating a new digital platform, connecting fragmented systems, modernising a legacy application, automating a critical workflow or adding AI capabilities to an existing technology estate.
NashTech's wider 2026 research found that 70% of organisations would choose custom software over commercial off-the-shelf solutions, with integration cited as the top reason. For logistics organisations, that is particularly relevant. The objective isn't to replace every system, it is to create a technology ecosystem in which the systems you already have, and the technology you introduce next, can work together effectively.
The most successful logistics technology strategies aren't necessarily those with the most technology. They are the ones that identify where technology creates disproportionate value.
That might be a highly automated warehouse. It might be better visibility across a complex network. It might be removing manual intervention from a high-volume process. It might be using AI to support better decisions. Or it might simply be connecting systems that have been operating in isolation for years.
The technology should follow the business requirement.
That means asking three questions:
Logistics is not an industry that can afford innovation for innovation's sake. Operations need to keep moving. Customers expect reliability. Margins remain under pressure. And technology investments need to demonstrate their value.
The answer isn't to become the organisation that adopts every new technology first. It is to become the organisation that understands where technology matters most and builds accordingly.
